An off-duty Fulton County sheriff’s deputy and her brother were killed in a shooting Wednesday night at a home in Covington, authorities said.

Shakeema Brown Jackson had been a member of the sheriff’s office since 2018 but had only been serving as a deputy for little more than a month. She was described as eager to learn and always positive.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat said in a statement. “This is a hard time for the sheriff’s office, and we ask for your continued prayers.”

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is investigating the shooting, which “may or may not be domestic related,” according to an agency spokeswoman. Newton deputies responded to the home in Covington around 10:30 p.m.

The name of the other victim was not released. The deputy leaves behind a 17-month-old.

“Coworkers say she was bubbly, and, no matter how disrespectful inmates may have been, always greeted them with ‘Good morning,’ earning their respect,” Fulton sheriff’s spokeswoman Candace Finethy said.

No other details about the shooting were available Thursday morning, and no person of interest has been identified, according to the Newton agency. Sheriff Ezell Brown extended his condolences to the victims’ families and to Labat and his staff.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Newton sheriff’s Investigator Joshua Hicks at 678-625-1455 or jhicks@newtonsheriffga.org.
