A Kansas teenager has turned himself in after he was accused of killing another teen over the weekend.

The Lawrence Police Department says on Sunday, March 19, that it asked for the public’s help to find a suspect in the shooting death of a local teenager.

Just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, LPD said officials were called to the 1100 block of E. 13th St. with reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a teenager with an apparent gunshot wound who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. However, he was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.

Witnesses told officials that the teen had been wounded when he arrived at the apartment complex and that the shooting had actually taken place in the 1300 block of Maple Lane.

Investigators said they worked overnight to identify the possible suspect and asked for the community’s help to find 17-year-old Derrick Del Reed.

Officials noted that several witnesses have been interviewed and evidence shows that Reed and the victim were known to each other. They have not released the name of the victim.

Just after 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, officials said Reed turned himself in and officials took him to the Douglas Co. Juvenile Detention Center. The vehicle also sought in connection to the incident was found unoccupied within city limits and is being processed by investigators.

On March 20, Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez announced that a Lawrence 17-year old has been charged with the first-degree murder of a Lawrence 14-year-old. The State will seek to prosecute the 17-year-old as an adult.

Douglas County officials said the 17-year-old is currently in custody. A detention hearing in the juvenile division is scheduled for 4 p.m. on March 21.

The arrest resulted from an investigation by the Lawrence Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
