On June 24, 2022, police say officers were called to a home in the 12760 block of Monte Vista Street in Detroit, Michigan for a wellness check on a child. Upon arrival, officers found the remains of a child inside a freezer in the home.

The victim was identified as 3-year-old Chayse Allen.

Chayse’s mother, 33-year-old Azuradee France, was charged days later, after the county’s medical examiner ruled the boy’s death was a homicide and caused by blunt force head trauma.

France told Detroit police that she kicked her son in the chest when she got frustrated with him for not eating in March 2022. When he wouldn’t wake up the next morning, she put his body in a bag and stashed it in the basement freezer.

France told police said she was too scared to call 911 because she didn’t want her other children to be taken away. Two of her other kids were crying and France told them she’d “take care of it,” she told Ben Biddle, a detective with the Police Department.

France told police that before her son’s death, she would often get frustrated with Chayse and hit him with a belt. She abused him for several months before his death, she told Biddle.

France told Biddle she didn’t want Chayse, but was too scared of losing her other kids to say anything about it. She’d never had a blind child before and didn’t have any help caring for her children, she said.

France had a history of abusing children and ignoring court-ordered mental health treatment. Child Protective Services investigated France at least five times from 2017 to 2020 and substantiated multiple reports of improper supervision and physical neglect and abuse.

At the time of her fifth child’s birth in 2020, her other four kids were in foster care due to physical abuse and France’s untreated mental health. They were in foster care because she had pleaded guilty in 2018 to “severe physical abuse” of her 2-year-old nephew.

In early July 2024, France pleaded guilty this month to second-degree murder. In exchange for her plea, charges of felony murder, first-degree child abuse, torture and concealing the death of an individual were dismissed.

On July 29, Judge Tracy Green sentenced France to 35 to 60 years in prison.
