20-year-old Desean Brown will face the death penalty in the death of 3-year-old Nylo Lattimore and his mother Nyteisha Lattimore, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters announced Wednesday.
Deters said he believes Nyteisha was killed on December 5. Her body was found around 3:30 a.m. on December 12 near the Purple People Bridge.
According to Deters, Nyteisha’s body was in her Walnut Hills apartment for five days before Brown disposed of it.
Brown purchased a body bag from eBay and took an Uber down to the Ohio River telling the driver it was his clothes because he was moving out, Deters said.
The Hamilton County Coroner said Nyteisha died from stab wounds.
Deters said Brown bought a body bag off of eBay.
Deters said Brown killed Nylo after his mother’s death, but before disposing of her body.
According to Deters, Brown put Nylo into the Ohio River alive.
“He didn’t want Nylo’s existence to be traced back to him. It’s a gruesome case,” he said. “He chose to kill Nylo in an incredibly barbaric method. I still have nightmares about this.”
The prosecutor said Nylo’s blood was found on a Paw Patrol blanket recovered with Nyteisha’s body.
His stroller was also located in the Ohio River near where his mother’s body was found.
According to the prosecutor’s office, evidence shows this is the timeline of the crimes:
- December 5, 2020 – Desean Brown kills Nyteisha Lattimore
- December 6, 2020 – Desean Brown throws Nylo in the river alive
- December 11, 2020 – Desean Brown takes the body bag containing Nyteisha’s body to the Purple People Bridge
- December 12, 2020– Nyteisha’s body discovered by law enforcement
- December 13, 2020– Nylo’s stroller located in the river
Nylo’s body still hasn’t been found. He hasn’t been seen since December 4.
Police say after interrogating Brown, they started to suspect foul play in Nylo’s disappearance.
Cincinnati police Lt. Steve Saunders says numerous search efforts have been conducted since Nylo was reported missing.
Deters said as far as a motive it appears to be “some boyfriend-girlfriend stuff,” but said there is no excuse for this tragic outcome.
“In all my years as a prosecutor, I have never seen such a cold-blooded act committed against an innocent woman and her 3-year-old baby. Throughout the US today, there are prosecutors who have chosen to never seek the death penalty. That’s not going to happen here as long as I am prosecutor for this county,” he said.
Brown is now charged with two counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications, one count of gross abuse of a corpse, and one count of tampering with evidence.
Deters thanked the Cincinnati Police Department for their efforts in this case.
“We will never stop searching for Nylo, and police will continue to accept any information anyone has on his whereabouts,” he said.
Hamilton Co. prosecutor gives update on disappearance of Nylo Lattimore
Nylo’s grandmother, Letitia Hughes, talked with FOX19 NOW Wednesday after the prosecutor spoke.
It was a short conversation, only lasting a couple of minutes, but in that time Huges struggled to find the words to describe her pain.
“I’ve been waiting. I’ve been waiting to find out where he’s been at,” Hughes said. “He had us searching for him. It’s just sad. Sad.”
There will be a balloon release and prayer for Nylo and Nyteisha at the memorial on the Purple People Bridge on February 27 at 1 p.m.
