A 20-year-old Lansing woman has been arraigned on three felony charges in connection with the Saturday shooting death of a Jackson, Mississippi woman.
Mackenzie Lynn Quarrels was arraigned Tuesday, March 23, before Jackson County District Judge Daniel A. Goostrey. She faces one count each of open murder, felony firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
The charges stem from the March 20 shooting death of 25-year-old Krashawna Emond Walker. Walker was found at 8:22 p.m. Saturday, March 20, lying on the sidewalk in the 200 block of W. South Street in Summit Township, police said. She had a gunshot wound to her upper body and was transported to Henry Ford Allegiance Health, where she later died from her injuries, police said.
The incident allegedly began with an argument over parking, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Nathan Hull said during the arraignment. Walker approached a vehicle Quarrels was in and Quarrels allegedly took a gun from her purse and shot Walker before fleeing the scene, Hull said.
Walker allegedly approached the vehicle aggressively, Quarrels’ defense attorney Kareem Johnson said.
Quarrels was arrested without incident on Monday, March 22, at a Battle Creek apartment complex after a two-hour negotiation with detectives, police said. The Battle Creek Police Department assisted in the arrest.
Bond was set at $300,000. Quarrels has no record of prior offenses, Goostrey said.
A preliminary examination has been set for 9:30 a.m. April 6.
Open murder carries a maximum penalty life in prison, felony firearm carries a mandatory two years and carrying a concealed weapon carries a five-year penalty.
