On December 23, 2015, Antonio was a 14-year-old foster child when he was left in charge of Destine King and two other foster children. The ages of the children were 6, 7 and 9, in the Memphis suburb of Cordova, Tennessee.

Destine and the two other children were being fostered by a woman who lived on Beaver Trail in Cordova. Antonio was a foster child of that woman’s daughter and lived at another home at the time of his arrest.

The children said Antonio repeatedly punched, kicked and whipped them with a belt and a cord for three days. But on the third day of babysitting things took a turn for the worse.

One of the children called 911 after Destine began throwing up and then became unresponsive. The 6-year-old was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in extremely critical condition.

Investigators said Destine had internal injuries, including a lacerated liver, bruising to the pelvis, a shoe print on private area and bleeding from the brain.

Destine’s brother and sister also suffered injuries at the hands of Antonio, according to investigators. One child said he was punched, kicked, slapped and hit with a belt. The girl told police he saw Antonio bit, punch and kick Destine. He allegedly told Destine not to tell anyone or he would kill her.

Destine passed away from her injuries five days later.

Her siblings were immediately removed from their home and placed in another foster home after being treated for their injuries.

Antonio Evans was originally also charged with rape of a child under eight, although that charge was later dropped.

He pleaded guilty to adult charges of second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse in the killing of Destine Star King. The judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison.
