Capt. Marty Sellers said the shooting happened about 12:15 a.m. Saturday in the 3200 block of Willow Lane. When police arrived, they found Leonard dead.
Edwards was booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on Sunday morning. Sellers said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are expected.
Investigators said they were still trying to determine whether the deadly shooting was linked to another one that happened at 11:30 p.m. Friday at the Branscomb Apartments public housing community. That shooting critically injured an 18-year-old female, as well as two 21-year-olds.
Edwards is being held without bond.
