A Louisiana businessman was killed by a teenager who entered a second-story window to visit the victim’s daughter, leading to an argument and fatal gunfight, authorities said Monday.

34-year-old Dezmon Hamilton died Sunday morning after he was shot by a 17-year-old at a home on Hayfield Drive in the Meadow View subdivision on the western side of the city, Police Chief David McDavid said.

He said the teen was trying to meet with the victim’s 14-year-old daughter and was spotted by a neighbor while climbing through a window using a ladder. Hamilton confronted the boy and took him downstairs to talk. Meanwhile, other relatives came to the house, including the girl’s mother.

At some point, an argument ensued and Hamilton and the teen began shooting at each other.

Hamilton died after suffering multiple gunshot injuries. The teen was seriously injured and has been hospitalized since Sunday.

Police plan to arrest the teen when he is released from the hospital on suspicion of second-degree murder. Also for illegal use of a weapon and possessing a stolen gun.

Officials said Hamilton was an entrepreneur, and state records list several businesses that he operated in the area.

Investigators are still determining what caused the deadly argument, McDavid said.
