Averyauna Enoch, the Reno, Nevada woman charged with first-degree murder in her 5-year-old stepdaughter’s 2018 death, is on trial in the Second Judicial District Court starting this week.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys made their opening arguments Wednesday. Crime scene investigators took the stand Thursday as prosecutors started to make the case that Enoch was directly responsible for the girl’s death.

In May 2018, Reno Police arrested Tyler Anderson and Enoch (then Averyauna Anderson). Arrest documents showed police believed the girl had lost “considerable” weight, had trouble digesting food and vomited on different occasions.

Despite that, the couple never took her to a hospital or to see a doctor, according to the documents, and police believed they were likely “isolating (her) from any type of public contact.”

The girl’s body was found inside a duffel bag in a Sacramento storage unit days after Tyler researched how to dispose of a body and the couple rented a U-Haul van.

Enoch is being charged with first-degree murder, child endangerment resulting in death and obstruction.

Judge Kathleen Drakulich is presiding over the case. Drakulich has not allowed cameras in the courtroom, a decision that several other media outlets are appealing.
