A man shot and killed a woman after she rejected his advances at an event in Detroit, Michigan on October 5, 2004. Five people were also injured during this incident.

Mary Spears was at the American Legion Joe Louis Post No. 375 partying with her fiancé and family. The Spears family was at the American Legion Louis Post No. 375, because they needed to unwind after leaving the funeral of another family member.

During the event, 38-year-old Mark Dorch approached her and began talking to her. The family said they did not know this man. However, he continued to hit on Mary for most of the evening, despite her polite insistence that she wasn’t interested.

When the Dorch asked for her number, Mary, told him she was already involved with someone. Dorch, however, continued harassing her. Soon, her family members stepped in, and things got heated.

Security took the man out of the club through the back door and escorted him to the front. After a fight broke out, Dorch took out a handgun and began shooting. Mary’s family members were hit by gunfire, five people were injured, as Dorch sprayed a group of them with bullets. One of those bullets killed Mary around 2 a.m.

Mary was only 27 years old. She left behind three sons, ages 8, 4 and 1.

After the shooting, Dorch to flee on foot. Police quickly caught him and took him into custody.

Mark Dorch was sentenced in June 2015 to 30-60 years in prison. During his sentencing, he apologized to the Spears family. “I deeply apologize for what happened that night, it wasn’t my intention to go looking for trouble,” Dorch said in court.
