A woman’s 3-month-old baby was found unharmed next to her dead body.

The discovery was made shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday in an apartment building at North 29th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Investigators believe the baby boy was alone for days.

Neighbors called 911 to report a foul odor that filled the hallways.

“That is death. I know what death smell like,” Vera Cowley said. “When they found that baby, I just burst out crying because that baby had been in there for several days that’s amazing.”

Davis was last seen alive Sunday.

“She went in the house, but never came back out,” another neighbor said. “I’m like, ‘Something is wrong, I ain’t seen Audrey, heard from Audrey. Something is not right.'”

Family members were too distraught to talk but identified the child’s mother as 19-year-old Audrey Davis.

They said the baby checked out at Children’s Wisconsin and uninjured but dehydrated.

He was expected to receive care there for the next several days. The boy will then be released into the care of other family members.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine Davis’ cause of death.

The autopsy did not find any signs of trauma. Investigators believe Davis may have died of natural causes.

They are still waiting on the results of toxicology tests.

Neighbors said they were glad the boy was unharmed.

Police only said Davis’ death was under investigation. No other details have been released.
