An 11-year-old girl is dead and her 5-year-old sister recovering after they were shot in a drive-by shooting Saturday night, October 2 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The girls were hit while inside a vehicle, and police said the driver brought them to MPD’s District 7 station, where officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived.
Police are looking for the shooter(s) while the community again calls for the violence to end.
According to police, this investigation began around 9 p.m. when a car carrying two girls who had just been shot pulled up in need of help. The victims were 11 years old and 5 years old. Both girls were taken to the hospital, but on Sunday, the Milwaukee County medical examiner confirmed the 11-year-old, identified as Ta’Niyla Parker, died from her injuries.

Parker’s mother provided photos of Ta’Niyla and her 5-year-old sister, Bra’Niyla Taylor, who is in stable condition at the hospital, according to police.
“As a parent, I can’t imagine what their parents are going through right now,” said Walter Garron, Los Brown Berets of Wisconsin. “It’s a scary situation.”
Hours after the shooting, at the same intersection Sunday, Los Brown Berets of Wisconsin stood on the sidewalk with a sign reading: “Stop killing our children.”
“So far, it’s been a good response,” said Garron. “A lot of people honking. A lot of people waving, agreeing with us, and hopefully, that can bring some more awareness.”
Garron and others are hoping for an end to gun violence in Milwaukee as another family grieves the loss of a loved one.
“Put the guns down guys, please,” said Garron. “Put the guns down. There’s no need for that type of violence. There’s no need to kill innocent kids.”
A statement from Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett’s office Sunday said the following: “The Mayor is extremely disturbed by the violence that killed an eleven-year-old and injured a five-year-old. He offers his condolences to the family.” The statement added that the mayor may have additional comments on Monday.
