An Indiana man has been charged with the murder of a 13-year-old boy and the attempted murder of another after allegedly shooting at a group of trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

23-year-old Desmond Crews was charged Wednesday in the death of Thomas DeLaCruz Jr. and the injury of the other 13-year-old, who has not yet been publicly identified.

One of the trick-or-treaters, wearing a clown mask, told police that “exchanged words” with a man in Hammond Sunday, less than an hour before the shooting, according to the newspaper. The man allegedly threatened to get a gun and kill the teen.

The candy-grabbers continued down the street before noticing that they were being followed by a silver car.

That’s when several men, including the one who had allegedly made the threat, got out and began shooting, according to police.

Crews, who allegedly confessed to being in the car, was caught by police after fleeing the scene on foot and dumping a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and two magazines in a barrel nearby.

Crews reportedly told police that he thought he shot over the boys’ head. Then claimed that he felt he “had to shoot” after being handed a gun by someone else in the car.

“He was the best brother, the best cousin, the best friend in the world,” Thomas’ mother, Jasmine Anderson, told the Times. “He danced, he was happy, he was a kid.”

No other arrests have been made yet.
