Allegheny County police have made an arrest in connection to the shooting death of a McKeesport, Pennsylvania woman in September.

On Friday, police charged 25-year-old Isaac Christopher Smith with homicide and homicide of an unborn child, in the death of 26-year-old Karli Short.

Court documents filed against Smith claim he was the father of Karli’s unborn child, and told another woman, later identified as his girlfriend, that he was leaving her home to see a friend’s new puppy the night he carried out the pre-planned murder.

“It’s a sense of relief. Now my family and I know what happened, know the motive and know who did it and it just brings us a step closer towards finding some way to heal,” said Short.

Karli was five months pregnant, and had asked Smith for money and talked about a gender reveal party through text messages just two days before her death.

According to the complaint, Short’s uncle, who she lived with, heard her talking with someone on the phone, and ask, “Are you coming to the front or the back?” Police say Short walked outside, and that’s when her uncle heard a gunshot. Police say evidence shows it was Smith on the other end of that line.

Smith was taken into custody on November 5 and is in the Allegheny County Jail.
