On Sunday night police responded to a Garner, North Carolina home for a domestic violence call between the man and woman living there. Less than an hour later, they returned to the same house for a fatal shooting.

Police were called to a home on Annotto Bay Lane around 8:30 p.m., where they discovered Peggy Yarborough arguing with her boyfriend Delquan Douglas in the home they shared.

Officers suggested that the couple separate for the night but did not file any criminal charges. Then, at 9:15 p.m., Yarborough called 911 to say she had shot Douglas. “She had said she shot the victim and requested us to respond,” said Lt. Kevan Anderson of the Garner Police.

“She had said she shot the victim and requested us to respond,” said Lt. Kevan Anderson of the Garner Police.

During the first call, investigators determined there was no crime and left after the couple agreed to spend the night apart.

According to Anderson, police did everything by the book. They interviewed both people and found no sign that their argument had been violent. Both Yarborough and Douglas agreed that neither had been hurt, and they had a plan in place to separate, Anderson said.

“During the first call, she said there was nothing physical. They were just arguing back and forth,” he said. “The second time, all she said was that she felt in danger and felt the need to take his life.”

This was the third time police had been called to this particular home. A police report from February 18, 2021 details another incident, when officers responded to a domestic violence call and charged Douglas with assaulting Yarborough. That case was still pending at the time of his death.

Officials charged Yarborough with his murder early Monday morning.
