A 76-year-old Bessemer, Alabama man was beaten to death with a space heater, and a young woman is now charged in his slaying.
24-year-old Monyuett Catrice Hinson is charged with capital murder in the killing of Alverner Blanks. She was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Thursday morning.
Blanks lived in the 2300 block of block of Holbrook Terrace and investigators say the attack happened there. Lt. Christian Clemons said the victim and the suspect were neighbors and acquaintances.

The assault happened Sept. 8, Clemons said. Investigators have determined that there some kind of dispute over money between Blanks and Hinson, and that the argument turned physical when Hinson picked up the space heater and struck him in the head. It wasn’t clear how many times he was hit.
Hinson left Blanks’ home and Blanks was later found unresponsive by a neighbor. That’s when police and medics were called and Blanks was transported to the hospital.
Police the following day arrested Hinson on charges of attempted murder, robbery and hindering prosecution. She was booked into the Jefferson County Jail Sept. 9 and released Sept. 24 after posting $25,000 bond.

Blanks remained hospitalized until Sept. 21, at which time he was transferred to an assisted living facility. He died three days later, on Sept. 24.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office this week ruled Blanks’ death a homicide, and police obtained the capital murder warrant against Hinson. The charge is capital because money and clothing belonging to Blanks were believed taken by Hinson.
The initial charges against her will now be dismissed.
Hinson was taken into custody Thursday morning at a Bessemer motel. She is being held without bond.
