A 20-year-old woman is behind bars, accused in the deadly shooting of another woman early Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Kaylin Landon Sparks is charged with capital murder in the slaying of 30-year-old Donnika Sills. The charge is capital because police say Sparks fired the fatal shots from a vehicle.
Sills, investigators said, was an innocent victim caught in the gunfire.
The shooting happened about 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the 100 block of Third Avenue North.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said North Precinct officers responded to the scene after hearing the gunfire. Shot Spotter also alerted police that more than 10 rounds had been fired in the area.
When officers got on the scene, they found Sills unresponsive on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced her dead on the scene.
Videos circulating on social media showed a physical fight between a group of women in that area that morning, but said Sills was not involved in that altercation. She just happened to be nearby when the shots were fired.
Sparks was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at noon on Wednesday. She is being held without bond.
