A 9-year-old Alabama girl has been charged with assault involving an incident that led to the death of her 4-year-old brother, according to officials.

The Mobile County District Attorney’s office confirmed the charge Monday evening.

The child’s charge is the second one in the February 3 incident, which happened around 8 a.m. that day off Jacob Drive in Mobile, Alabama.

Police responded to the area after getting calls about a medical emergency.

Upon arrival, officers found the 4-year-old boy unresponsive inside the home.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy’s aunt and caregiver, 53-year-old Yolanda Coale, was arrested last week. She was charged with one count of aggravated child abuse.

Police spokeswoman Corporal Katrina Frazier said that detectives found signs that the boy suffered from abuse.

Court records add to this statement, saying that said injuries were unexplained and indicated long-term abuse.

The records also accuse the 9-year-old of beating her 4-year-old brother with a broomstick and that there’s a history of abuse at the home.

Coale’s bond is currently set at $150,000.

Multiple agencies, including the Mobile Police Department and Mobile-Fire Rescue are still investigating the incident.
