Toledo, Ohio police arrested a suspect in the shooting death of a 24-year-old woman Tuesday.
Officers and SWAT units stopped a car on Hill near Richards and arrested 26-year-old Robert Sherman for the murder of Ashley Darrington.
According to police and the victim’s family, Darrington and Sherman have children together. Her family said that he was her boyfriend and had recently been released from jail.
Darrington’s mother requested that police do a wellness check at the Hilltop Village Apartments off Byrne after she hadn’t heard from her for a day. When police entered the home they discovered Ashley’s body and her two young children inside.
According to documents filed at Toledo Municipal Court, Sherman allegedly shot Darrington with a 7.62 caliber firearm. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office determined that Darrington had been struck by five bullets, including in the head and right arm.
A witness told detectives that Sherman was seen coming and going from the apartment over the last five days, overhearing several loud arguments between the two. He was also seen driving her car, which was found at his apartment.
Sherman was in court Wednesday morning. A judge set his bond at $1 million and ordered the suspect have no contact with the victim’s family. His preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 23.
