A Pennsylvania 15-year-old boy died after being shot while riding a bike in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood on Wednesday.
The shooting happened a little after 6 p.m. in the 800 block of North Homewood Avenue. Police said the victim had been shot in the head.
15-year-old Dayvon Vickers died after being taken to the hospital, the medical examiner’s office said.
His mentor, Amber Sloan, told local news, “So when I got down there and I seen the officer working on him, I parked my scooter over on the other side and I walked over. I looked down and I was in disbelief. I could not believe what I seen.”
Vickers loved riding his bike and selling bottled water in the community.
She said his other mentor was killed, his friend was murdered and his mother recently died.
“When I was a teenager and I was on my way to college I lost my mom. So I know what it feels like to lose your mom and be lost in these streets. We are lost trying to find ourselves. He was trying to find himself as a young man,” said Sloan.
Sloan said she was trying to think of a way to help White’s mother Theresa deal with her loss when she found out about Vickers.
“When I got the phone call I was at a childhood friend’s house, me her and her daughter and we were trying to literally sit there and think how were we going to try and support Teresa who just lost another son,” Sloan said.
Sloan said she is meeting with some of the kids in the community to help them deal with their loss and she is trying to work with Pittsburgh mayor Ed Gainey to help stop the violence.
Police are investigating the homicide, as well as two others that happened in the city this week. Anyone with information is asked to call police headquarters at 412-323-7800.
