Police in Florida have released new details about a shooting that killed one woman late Monday night.
Orlando police say just before midnight, two women were fighting in the courtyard area between buildings at the Windsor Cove Apartments on Mercy Drive.
The women were identified as 31-year-old Lakrisha S. Isaac and 41-year-old Lashun Denise Rodgers.
Rodgers was just grilling out for Memorial Day at her Mercy Drive apartment when Isaac came over and started a fight.
According to Orlando police, Isaac handed her 10-year-old daughter a bag that contained a firearm.
“The juvenile retrieved that firearm from the bag and fired two rounds, striking the victim,” a report states.
Rodgers was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Orlando police say the child and Isaac were both taken into custody.
The child was turned over to DCF.
Isaac is charged with:
- Manslaughter culpable negligence
- Child neglect
- Contributing to the delinquency of a minor
- Aggravated assault with a firearm
The State Attorney’s Office will determine charges for the 10-year-old.
Miles Mulrain, a community activist with the organization Let Your Voice Be Heard, said the situation on the ground is “chaotic” but his group is working with both families involved to make sure they get assistance and “start the healing process.”
“This is a situation where everyone was failed in it,” he said. “The young lady was failed the most.”
Mulrain said he hopes authorities consider rehabilitation for the girl, rather than just punishment.
“We just had one person lose their life and another family being criminalized,” he said. “Everybody loses.”
Loved ones put flowers on the sidewalk and wrote messages for the woman killed in the shooting, a woman they called Bone.
