Police in Alabama started a homicide investigation after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed while riding inside of a car in Birmingham.
Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday, South Precinct officers were dispatched to Overton Road and Liberty Parkway on reports of a person shot. When officers arrived, officers with the Vestavia Hills Police Department informed Birmingham officers that someone with a gunshot wound was transported to Grandview Hospital where he died.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later identified the teen as 16-year-old Jamie Monte Gibson.
Birmingham Police said witnesses observed a vehicle off the interstate before shots were fired and saw the teen collapsed in the roadway. He was transported to Grandview by the Vestavia Hills Fire Department.
Police said according to witnesses, Gibson was possibly a passenger in the back seat of a car when he was shot and pushed out.
Police said the car Gibson was in is possibly a red sedan. Police added the make of the car may be a Toyota.
Gibson was a student at Huffman High School. He was in the tenth grade.
“He is gone but he will not be forgotten here at Huffman High School,” said the principal, John Lyons. “Every time I see that, it hurts because I see those kids as I see my kid. Loosing one kid, one student, one child, is one too many.”
Gibson is the 8th student in Birmingham City Schools killed by gun violence since January.
His mother posted about his death on Facebook saying: “I’m lost. You and your sister are my EVERYTHING. I don’t know which way to go. My world has literally crumbled. I don’t want to hate them but I do. You taught me how to love UNCONDITIONALLY. I didn’t know love until YOU. You loved me past my faults and your love alone brought me through many dark nights. I needed YOU waaaayyy more than you needed me. Jamie…Monte…Gibson without you I will never be the same. I just truly hope you knew how much your mama love you and ALWAYS WILL SON. Until we meet again”
