A 33-year-old Alabama man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 9-month-old baby boy in Bessemer.

Killian O’Donnell Robinson is charged with capital murder in the murder of 9-month-old Zachery Taylor Carter.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Zachery sustained blunt force trauma injuries April 27 while at a home in the 500 block of 36th Street North. The baby died at 8:29 p.m. the following day at Children’s of Alabama.

Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons said police were dispatched to the 36th Street North home at 9:01 a.m. that Wednesday but when they arrived, the door was open and nobody was at home. At 9:13 a.m. the boy’s mother showed up at the police department with the unresponsive baby.

The Bessemer Fire Department transported Zachery to UAB West and then he was transferred to Children’s where he later died.

Clemons said the investigation shows the mother left the baby and her other two children, ages 3 and 7, in the care of her boyfriend because she was starting a new job that day.

Robinson was the last person known to be with Zachery, police said. No additional details have been released.

Robinson was booked into the Jefferson County Jail at 6:04 p.m. Friday. He is being held without bond.
