Deputies in Florida say a 1-year-old girl was killed and a 2-year-old girl was injured in a shooting early Sunday at Lion’s Motel in Escambia County.

Sheriff Chip Simmons announced Monday morning that an 8-year-old fired the gunshots.

The 8-year-old’s father, 45-year-old Roderick Randall was arrested on these charges:

  • weapon offense
  • crimes against person
  • destroying evidence
  • possession of weapon

Lion’s Motel is located at MLK Jr. Drive and Anderson Street.

According to Sheriff Simmons, Randall and his girlfriend had a room at the motel with the children.

Sheriff Simmons says after Randall left and while the girlfriend was sleeping, Randall’s 8-year-old son grabbed his gun from a closet and fired one round in the room. The gunshots killed a 1-year-old girl and injured a 2-year-old girl.

Family identified the victim as 1-year-old Kacey Bass.

The 2-year-old is hospitalized and expected to recover. The 2-year-old’s twin was also in the room, but was not injured.

“The one round unfortunately went through the 1-year-old and struck the 2-year-old,” Sheriff Simmons said.

The toddlers are not Randall’s children, according to Sheriff Simmons.

Sheriff Simmons stated that when Randall arrived back at the room, he grabbed the gun and drugs before leaving the scene. Deputies later arrested him Sunday morning.

Jail records show Randall has been released from Escambia County Jail on $41,000 bond.

Sheriff Simmons said Randall is a 14-time convicted felon.
