An 18-year-old South Carolina boy was killed in a shooting Monday night after police tried to break up a large Memorial Day party.
The Spartanburg Police Department was called to Collins Avenue on Memorial Day due to a large crowd and a number of cars blocking streets and driveways.
He said the size of the crowd combined with the number of vehicles blocking streets and driveways caused concern for neighbors.
Littlejohn said as officers cleared the scene, someone started shooting in the immediate area.
He said officers reported hearing multiple gunshots and tried to find the person responsible.
While searching the area they discovered a teen’s body lying on the ground behind a home on Collins Avenue where the party was taking place.
They found 18-year-old Christopher Tyrone Tyshun Petty with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. Officers rendered aid to Petty but he died on scene.
The coroner said an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
No suspects have been identified and no arrests have been made, according to Littlejohn.
The gunman has not been identified. Spartanburg Police Department is asking for anyone with information to call 864-596-2065.
