A Maryland woman was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday after she was found guilty of murdering her newborn baby.

41-year-old Moira Akers was taken to Howard County General Hospital by ambulance on November 1, 2018. Prosecutors said hospital staff said she initially did not tell them she had given birth.

During a search of Akers’ Columbia home, investigators said they found a male newborn wrapped in towels inside a Ziplock bag. The bag was put inside a closet and covered by a blanket, authorities said.

Prosecutor said they found evidence on Akers’ electronic devices that she made multiple internet searches on how to terminate a pregnancy.

Akers maintained the baby was stillborn and was never alive.

However, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy on the infant and determined the cause of death was asphyxiation and exposure. The death was ruled a homicide.

A jury found Akers guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree child abuse in April.

Howard County State’s Attorney Rich Gibson said in April that Akers’ case was “one of the most difficult cases my office has ever had to prosecute.”
