A Minnesota man who is already charged with murder for a fatal shooting has now been charged in connection to a Brooklyn Center crash last week that killed a 6-year-old girl.
28-year-old Hakeem Waheed Muhammad is charged with causing a death while fleeing police, criminal vehicular operation and criminal vehicular homicide for the Friday crash.
A warrant had been issued for his arrest in connection to the killing of 28-year-old Devan Dampier of Minneapolis this spring.
According to a criminal complaint, Brooklyn Center police learned Friday that Muhammad was in a parking lot at or near Speedway, located near 57th and Logan avenues north. However, when officers arrived, drew their weapons and ordered Muhammad to show his hands, he put the Chevrolet Equinox in drive and fled, leading to a pursuit.
As Muhammad sped and weaved through traffic, sometimes in oncoming lanes, he crashed into a Ford Edge at the intersection of 53rd Avenue North and Humboldt Avenue, flipping the Ford, which was occupied by an adult and five kids.
The complaint states police noted Muhammad was driving 94 mph just before reaching the intersection and slamming into the Ford, which had the right of way and pulled into the intersection.
After the crash, officers saw a 6-year-old girl unresponsive in the back seat of the car. Officers performed CPR on her before she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her family has identified her as Blessings.
A 15-year-old girl was also hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury and remained in the hospital as of Tuesday, according to the complaint.
Muhammad was arrested at the scene of the crash with a possible broken leg, the complaint states.
His first court appearance for the charges related to the crash is set for Wednesday afternoon.
