Police in Rhode Island are investigating a shooting death of a 15-year-old boy on Saturday night in Providence.
Police responded to Wallace Street just after 11 p.m.
“We responded to a 911 call for a disturbance and at least one gunshot,” said Capt. Timothy O’Hara.
The boy has not been yet identified by police, but Maddie Tilson says it was her son, Ger’Vonte Tilson.
A neighbor who spoke anonymously said the boy died right in his driveway. He said he didn’t hear any gunshots and only learned something was wrong when he heard police and looked outside.
“Blood all over the driveway, cars and everything,” he said.
Police said the teenager died at the scene.
“I started crying and it was it was big – was really bad,” the neighbor said.
A makeshift memorial at the scene read “RIP Ger’vontae Forever in our Hearts.”
“His familiarity with his neighborhood is unknown at this time,” said O’Hara. “So, it’s really a question as to why he was up here in the first place.”
Mayor Jorge Elorza joined police as they continued investigating Sunday.
“My heart goes out for the young boy and his family,” he said.
Police had no initial suspects or people of interest in the shooting.
“We’re just trying to find anything we can to give that family some answers,” said O’Hara.
Elorza noted that the city would benefit from more cameras.
“This comes in the context of, you know, us looking to install some license plate reading cameras throughout the city as well,” Elorza said. “And, you know, almost all of these cases they involve a car and having that technology is going to be so helpful to make sure that we bring people to justice.”
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Providence police.
