A woman is dead and her 14-year-old daughter wounded in an overnight shooting that led to a police standoff at a Dallas apartment complex early Thursday, police say.

A Dallas police spokesman said officers were called shortly after 12:40 a.m. to reports of two people being shot in the 12100 block of Audelia Road.

The woman, identified as 33-year-old Karla Castillo, was taken to a nearby hospital where she died from her injuries. A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized and in critical condition with a gunshot wound in the stomach, police said. Family members said she was Castillo’s daughter.

According to Castillo’s brother, Juan Castillo, his sister and her three children were at home with her boyfriend, Jorge Saldenos Escobar Flores.

He said she was planning to leave him, which led to a fight and Flores shooting both Castillo and her daughter. The other two children safely escaped.

According to police, Flores then barricaded himself inside an apartment unit, police said. Officers surrounded the apartment through the overnight hours until Dallas SWAT broke their way into the home.

Flores was found dead inside, police confirmed shortly after 7 a.m. Police said they believe he took his own life.

Additional officers were called due to the large crowd that had gathered around the crime scene, police said.

“I just knew something bad had happened, because I’ve never seen that many police officers over here at one time, so I knew it was something really bad and drastic,” said neighbor Tarina Burns.

The investigation is ongoing. More details are expected to be released as developments unfold.
