Geraldine R. Jones was sentenced to 30 years in May 2018 in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old Samantha J. Fleming, whose body was found April 17, 2015, in Jones’ home in the 1900 block of Cleveland Street.

Jones was sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison for kidnapping the woman and her 3-month-old daughter, Serenity, but that term of imprisonment was suspended for 10 years probation.

Jones did not make a statement during her sentencing hearing, but Fleming’s mother, Sandy Segneri, said her daughter loved unconditionally and no sentence would bring her back.

Jones was initially charged April, 20, 2015, with murder in Flemings’ killing.

Jones visited Fleming’s home April 6, 2015, in Anderson and convinced the woman she was an employee of the Indiana Department of Child Services. Dressed in business attire and holding a binder of fake paperwork, Jones told Fleming she was there to drive her to a court hearing in Gary. She told Fleming to bring Serenity.

The young mother and Serenity never returned home, and on April 10, 2015, Fleming’s boyfriend reported the woman missing. Anderson police determined Fleming was near 15th Avenue and Interstate 65 by tracking her cellphone GPS.

Gary police officers went to Jones’ home, where they found Serenity being cared for by Jones’ sister. The sister said Jones had left for Texas a week earlier. Police searched the home and found Flemings’ body stuffed in a storage bin in a closet.

Jones previously told neighbors and family members that she was pregnant with twins, though she did not allow friends or family members to visit her in the hospital.

Jones was extradited from Texas and arraigned in May 2015 in Madison County. She pleaded guilty May 4 to the voluntary manslaughter and kidnapping charges in a plea agreement with prosecutors.
