A Texas man is behind bars after police said he shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in her home.

Shortly after 5 a.m., police responded to 7200 Athens Street for a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. Officers arrived and found the woman dead.

The victim was later identified as 36-year-old Shereena Ann (Byington) Webster.

Homicide investigators identified her ex-boyfriend, 32-year-old Erik Mitchell Rivas, as the the suspect.

Police issued a BOLO (Be on the lookout) after learning Rivas had left town.

Rivas was later arrested by DPS in DeSoto, south of Dallas.

According to DPS, Amarillo police contacted the Texas Rangers to ask for help locating Rivas.

They believed he was traveling to the DFW area.

“With the assistance of Texas Highway Patrol troopers, DPS aircraft, Fort Worth police, and Dallas police, Rivas was located in the DeSoto area and arrested without incident,” said DPS.

Because Rivas traveled through Wise County and it was the ranger from Wise County who arrested him, Rivas was transported to the Wise County jail, according to DPS.

His bond was set at $500,000.

Webster recently started working for the Region 16 Education Service Center as a “Learning Leader.” She was previously a third-grade teacher at Oak Dale Elementary.

United and Mrs. Baird’s Bread named her the December 2015 winner of the Amarillo “Teachers On The Rise” program which honors teachers who go above-and-beyond the call of duty. The program is now in its 10th year.

Neighbors said Webster had a young daughter.

According to property records, Webster just closed on the house in February.
