Deputies in Florida say DNA evidence led them to arrest a gay pornography model in the 2010 execution-style killing of a 31-year-old Oakland Park man.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that detectives made an arrest in the August 30, 2010 killing of Alfred “Chad” McMurray .
52-year-old Aaron Michael Dobbins now faces a first-degree murder charge.
According to an arrest report, deputies arrived at McMurray’s house on Northeast 34th Street to find him lying face down with a gunshot wound, hands tied behind his back.
McMurray’s truck had been stolen, along with some personal items, the report states. The truck was located the next day, “doused with bleach inside and out,” at an apartment complex in Lauderhill.
BSO spokesperson Miranda Grossman said despite conducting numerous interviews and gathering evidence, detectives were unable to identify a clear suspect.
The arrest report states that while searching a national database in May, DNA under McMurray’s fingernails matched up to Dobbins.
Detectives couldn’t find any association between Dobbins, who lived in Oakland Park between 2010 and 2015, and McMurray, but did find Dobbins on numerous gay pornography websites.
“BSO Homicide Unit detectives determined Dobbins lived in Oakland Park during the time of the murder and knew McMurray through Dobbins’ roommate,” Grossman said.
According to the arrest report, Dobbins’ roommate and one-time partner was gay pornography model John Navarro. Navarro reportedly met McMurray through the internet, where Navarro was known as “Mr. Muscle Stud,” and performed paid massages.
The report states that Navarro and McMurray met at least three times, including one occasion where he, McMurray and Dobbins had group sex.
Detectives wrote that Navarro called McMurray multiple times on the night of the killing, though the report states that Navarro was never initially questioned about the calls.
Navarro, in a later interview, couldn’t explain why Dobbins’ DNA was under the victim’s fingernails, detectives wrote. He told detectives that he and Dobbins had been in a relationship for five years and that Dobbins was “very jealous.”
In May, detectives traveled to Pasco County to interview Dobbins.
Dobbins told Broward County detectives he met Navarro on a gay dating site called “Big Muscle,” and fell in love with him because it was a “special thing,” but problems in their relationship arose because Dobbins was “just coming out of the closet,” while Navarro had been out for years, detectives wrote.
Navarro’s penchant for hardcore sexual activities reportedly bothered Dobbins.
Dobbins denied having group sex with the victim, but later said he wanted to “(err) on the side of caution,” changing his story to “maybe he had relations with him,” deputies wrote.
Dobbins implied that his DNA was under McMurray’s fingernails because McMurray had beaten him up and denied ever having gone to the victim’s house. He also told detectives he never owned a gun because of past “anger issues,” detectives said.
“Aaron Dobbins stated that his DNA under the victim’s fingernails was ‘irrefutable’ and (said) ‘you are right, if my DNA was there, then I was there, but I don’t remember being there,’“ investigators wrote.
Dobbins, who was arrested in Hillsborough County last Thursday, was being held in the Broward Main Jail without bond.
