Police in Orlando, Florida confirmed that a 16-year-old girl found shot to death Monday night is the same De’Shayla Ferguson who was reported missing in Orlando back in August.
What happened between then and the night she was found dead still remains a mystery.
The Orange County sheriff’s office is still searching for her killer.
“I heard one shot, boom,” said a neighbor named Maria, who did not wish to reveal her last name.
Neighbors who live off Broken Pine Circle in Orlando said it was right around 7 p.m. when they heard a single gunshot.
“So I stayed quiet, you know, because sometimes you wait for more or something like that. So I don’t hear nothing more. I only heard some people screaming. That’s it,” Maria said.
She said after the shot rang out, she stepped outside to see what happened.
“I don’t see the body. I don’t see nothing. I only see the little bunch. The kids around,” she said.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Ferguson was shot and killed in the front yard of a nearby home.
It’s unclear what lead up to the shooting, and at this time, the shooter remains at large.
According to Orlando police, Ferguson was reported missing back on Aug. 12 after she left the Department of Children and Families office on South Kirkman Road.
A missing persons report was filed and her information was posted on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website.
What happened to Ferguson in the two months she was missing remains unknown.
Maria said she doesn’t know the people who live at that house but was sad to learn the victim was so young.
“I feel bad. I feel bad because I have a granddaughter this age, 16 years old, so,” Maria said.
When it comes to her murder case, the sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing.
