A 12-year-old South Carolina boy has died after being shot by his 17-year-old brother Thursday night on Hector Road in the Effingham community of Florence County, according to Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye.

The child was being treated at a hospital Thursday night, but Joye confirmed that on Friday morning, the child had passed.

Joye added the child’s teen brother, 17-year-old Antony Juarez-Simon, shot him in the head.

As of 12 p.m., Friday, Juarez-Simon is being held at the Florence County Detention Center, and has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, pointing and presenting a firearm, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

Investigators said Juarez-Simon he “acted with reckless disregard for the safety of others when he shot the victim,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The investigation is still in the early stages and deputies are still gathering information.
