Police in Indiana are investigating the fatal shooting of a Muncie woman on Friday afternoon.

Two women were shot at two different homes in the 800 block of South Monroe Street, according to Melissa Criswell, deputy chief of the Muncie Police Department.

Officers first responded to a report of shots fired in the area at 4:38 p.m.

Police and Muncie firefighters first entered a home at 818 S. Monroe and found a 37-year-old woman “conscious and suffering from gunshot wounds,” Criswell said.

The emergency responders then entered another home, at 814 S. Monroe, and found 43-year-old Joanie Elaine Webb, also suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken by ambulance to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The other gunshot victim was also taken to the hospital and was in stable condition on Saturday, Criswell said.

The deputy chief said investigators believe neither woman had been “the intended target in this senseless act of violence” and called the victims “innocent bystanders.”

She said officers were seeking “several individuals to speak to” about the shootings. Investigators have been told several people have information “but are not cooperating to help solve this case,” according to a release.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Muncie Police Department’s detective division at 765-747-4867 or the Drug Task Force at 765-747-4866.
