A New York family identified the 17-year-old girl shot and killed in Brooklyn on Monday as Bedford-Stuyvesant resident Keyaira Rattray-Brothers.
Sundance Oliver, the man accused of shooting dead Rattray-Brothers and wounding a 96-year-old amid a violent citywide spree, turned himself into Crown Heights police on Tuesday morning, police said.
“She was just telling me how her day was going, that she loved me and that she’d be home soon,” Rattray-Brothers’ mother told the New York Times. “I told her, ‘Keyaira be safe out there, I love you too and I’ll see you soon.”
“I just want my kid back,” Rattray continued to the New York Times, breaking down in tears. “I just want to tell her I love her and to hold her and be there for her, but I can’t because somebody took that away from me.”
Rattray was a student at Independence High School in Midtown, and wanted to be an R&B and gospel signer, her mother told the New York Times.
Oliver turned himself into the 77th Precinct shortly before 7 a.m. after cops “blanketed” the city looking for him, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said during an overnight press conference.
Oliver had been arrested 12 prior times, and was currently on parole for robbery, NYPD said during a press conference.
Oliver was wanted for three shootings, including two in Crown Heights, police said.
The first took place about 9:30 a.m. on Monday, when a 96-year-old in a wheelchair near Bergen Street and Rochester Avenue was shot in the leg as Oliver open fired after an attempted robbery, police said.
The senior citizen was brought to Kings Country Hospital in stable condition, police said.
A few hours later, Oliver is suspected of fatally shooting Upper West Side resident Kevon Langston on Manhattan’s Lower East Side at 15 St. James Pl., police said.
The day of shootings that Oliver is believed to be responsible for ended with a 17-year-old girl getting fatally shot in Crown Heights about midnight at 719 Kingsborough 7 Walk, police said.
The teenager was shot in the chest and rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
It is unclear what the motives of the shootings were.
