A 3-year-old Tennessee boy died on Wednesday in what Sheriff Bob Brooks called an accidental shooting.
Brooks said that an accidental shooting occurred at a home on Doe Court off of Barren Creek Road in New Tazewell on Wednesday morning. The child, Drake Adams, was airlifted to UT Medical Center and pronounced dead.
According to Drake’s aunt, the 3-year-old passed away while undergoing surgery at UT Medical Center.
“Drake was literally the light of everyone’s lives. He loved his mommy, daddy, brother and sister very much. His normal routine was watching Coco Melon. There was never a dull moment with him. He was always wide open. He would make friends with everyone who came in contact with him. It was a horrible accident that I hope no other family has to endure,” said Stephanie Edens.
The father of the child, Anthony Adams, was taken into custody later in the day. He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance.
“Anthony loved Drake more than anything in this world and he would never hurt that baby. His arrest was unrelated,” said Edens.
The gun involved was a pellet gun.
On December 29, Anthony was arraigned in court. He received no bond. His next court date is set for January 5.
The incident remains under investigation by the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
