A 26-year-old Alabama woman was shot and killed during a domestic dispute with a 20-year-old man in Athens early Sunday morning.
Authorities arrested 20-year-old Ky’ruan Yarbrough. He’s charged with capital murder for shooting and killing 26-year-old Alexis Garth.
Police are calling this a domestic violence shooting. Officers arrived at 4 a.m. this morning at the 22000 block of Oakdale Ridge Lane.
“I heard the dogs barking about 4 o’clock in the morning so I thought they might have wanted to go out but they ran straight to the front door. So I poked my head out and I just heard some people saying ‘get behind the car, get behind the car, so I shut the door and locked it.”
That’s Brock Suggs, who was house-sitting in the home next door when the shooting happened.
“When I stood outside there was a body laying on the ground and they were taking away a guy in handcuffs and the grandmother was out there, she was screaming and yelling, she was pretty distraught. Which I can understand,” he said. “And then they kind of taped everything off until nine or ten this morning.”
Kathy Wells was Garth’s other next door neighbor who works for Crisis Services of North Alabama. They specialize in domestic violence situations.
She wishes she had known Garth was a victim of domestic violence because she could have been able to provide her help.
“Had I seen the police here before, I would’ve let her know that there’s help out there. But typical situation, a lot of times victims pretty much stay to themselves. That’s part of the pattern and so I had no idea.”
When officers arrived they say they found Garth in the driveway. She was taken to Huntsville Hospital where she later died from her injuries.
Yarbrough is being held in the Limestone County Jail without bond. Athens Police say this is still an active investigation. We’ll continue to bring you updates as we receive them.
