A woman told police that a man accused of holding her against her will for hours burnt her with a torch and punched her in the face in Barbour County, court records said.

47-year-old Sammy Joe Martz is charged with kidnapping after a woman was found hiding with injuries allegedly sustained from being tortured for several hours, a criminal complaint filed in Barbour County Magistrate Court said.

Martz is accused of hitting the woman in the face and causing her eye to swell shut, burning her with a butane torch and threatening to kill her while holding her against her will for more than four hours, the complaint said.

The woman was found hiding under a nearby porch in the 600 block of Lander Road after she escaped Martz’s home through a window and called police, according to the complaint.

While taking Martz into custody, police said they observed money and drugs laying on the floor in an open bag.

Police said more charges could be filed against Martz as the investigation continues.
