New Orleans Police Department in Louisiana says the 15-year-old juvenile male suspect in the shooting that killed a Warren Easton High student, has surrendered.
The shooting happened Monday night on the 3000 block of St. Roch Avenue.
NOPD obtained an arrest warrant for the teen on Tuesday afternoon. He faces a negligent homicide charge.
When responding officers arrived on the scene, they learned that the juvenile male victim was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle. The victim later died at the hospital.
Family members have identified the victim as 15-year-old Tyler Ellis, a freshman at Warren Easton High School. They said he is a straight-A student who played football locally for a club called the Dolphins.
Ellis was with a friend in his room when the shooting happened, according to his mom.
Ellis’ death was the second shooting death of a Warren Easton student in about two weeks.
At the very end of January, Ellis’ close friend Kennedi Belton was also shot and killed as she attended a sleep over in New Orleans East. Belton was also a 15-year-old.
Warren Easton Charter School released the following statement in reaction to Ellis’ death:
Warren Easton Charter High School is truly heartbroken that gun violence continues to impact our city’s young people, and tragically, another one of our students. We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family affected. At Warren Easton, our entire school community is committed to making every effort to build a future of promise for New Orleans. In the meantime, we will continue to offer counseling and additional supports to students, staff, and faculty to help our school community cope with this loss and heal.
