A 17-year-old Tennessee girl is dead following a shooting in Brownsville, the Haywood County Sheriff said.

The sheriff said a Haywood High student was shot and killed in a vehicle when returning home. The victim has been identified as Christine Michael.

The Haywood Sheriff’s Office said have arrested 18-year-old Kevion Davis and a 16-year-old in connection to the death of 17-year-old Christine Michael.

Davis has been charged with first degree murder in this case, and the 16-year-old is being held at a juvenile detention facility on a first degree murder charge as well.

Christine Michael was described as sitting in the back seat when she was struck by at least one bullet. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office reported a minor with a “shrapnel” type injury to another 13-year-old in the same car. The driver was not injured.

Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. said that there will be an additional 3 charges for attempted first degree murder sought for each defendant.

The Lauderdale School district issued the following statement: “Lauderdale County Schools extends our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Christine Michael and the Brownsville/Haywood County community.”

In addition, Haywood High School cancelled events scheduled for Saturday night out of respect for the family.
