An Indiana woman was killed in a shooting in Indianapolis early Monday morning, The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 36-year-old Dorothy Brinker.

Officers responded to the 6000 block of Oak Avenue, near South Arlington Avenue and Washington Street, shortly after 2 a.m. for a report of shots fired.

As they were arriving to the scene, officers began receiving calls of a disturbance. They then located Brinker with an apparent gunshot wound lying in the middle of the street.

Brinker was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man police described as a person of interest was located with Brinker and taken into custody, IMPD said. The man was being questioned by detectives early Monday.

Police believe Brinker and the man who was detained knew each other, and IMPD said it believes there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Kyle Hoover at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email him at Kyle.Hoover@indy.gov. Tips can also be made anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
