A Wisconsin woman is accused of killing an employee of a car dealership on Monday over a dispute about a leased vehicle, according to authorities.
According to a criminal complaint, 23-year-old Jakira T. Anderson was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the shooting death of 34-year-old Kawsu Samba.
The shooting occurred at MSI Auto Sales in Middleton shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Police said that Anderson had been at the dealership for more than four hours. She wanted to either receive a refund or exchange the car she had leased for another vehicle.
Police said the discussion “escalated” and Anderson allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Samba as he attempted to push her out of the building.
Anderson told police in an interview that she had bought the gun legally and carried it in her waistband without a concealed carry permit. She added that she had not had the chance to register the weapon.
Anderson allegedly told police she took out the gun “to scare (Samba) back or something.”
“I wasn’t trying to kill him, just scare (him) away and I didn’t think I was going to hit him, I wasn’t even aiming or nothing,” she allegedly told Detective Daniel Jones.
Samba was taken to an area hospital where he died a short time later.
State Assistant Public Defender Adam Welch said that while Anderson left the scene after the shooting right, “there are also facts in the complaint suggesting that Miss Anderson felt threatened at that time and was afraid.” Welch added that Anderson surrendered and cooperated with police.
It is unclear from the complaint how long the confrontation lasted before Anderson allegedly shot Samba. In the criminal complaint, police said security footage showed Samba allegedly pushing Anderson, according to the television station. The complaint does not include any further information about what authorities saw in the footage.
Anderson appeared in court on Wednesday. Her bail was set at $1 million. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 30.
