Police in Maryland have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with the shooting death of Baltimore boxer, 33-year-old Ernest Hall.
Five other people were injured by the gunfire on March 23, too.
Hall, a junior featherweight boxer, was one of six people shot in the 2800 block of Edmondson Avenue in West Baltimore. He was the only one who didn’t survive.
A 15-year-old boy, a 24-year-old man, a 21-year-old man, and 18-year-old man and a 22-year-old man all were injured in the shooting.
The 15-year-old was arrested around 4:30 p.m. when members of the Southwest District Action Team, Baltimore Community Intelligence Center (BCIC) and Foxtrot coordinated efforts to find him in the 2800 block of Baker Street.
He has been charged with first-degree murder, five counts of first-degree attempted murder and various handgun violations.
Baltimore City Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said a vehicle stopped at the location and multiple shooters exited the vehicle before firing gunshots indiscriminately into a crowd of people.
Afterward, the shooters allegedly got back into their vehicle and fled the scene.
A week after Hall’s death, community members paid tribute to the boxer with a charity match at Lightning Quick Fit gym in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood.
His family said they will keep the gym up and running for him and they want to begin a trust fund for his children.
Hall’s family sent this statement to local news on the arrest:
“On behalf of the children of Ernest Hall, the family would like to thank the hard and diligent work of the Baltimore City Police Department on the swift apprehension of the first suspect in our loved ones murder.
“Due to the current suspects age we would also like to extend our prayers to his family as they are now experiencing a family tragedy as well. We plea to the remaining suspects to turn yourselves in; as it is not to late to change your lives. We ask that Justice be served fair and lightning quick.”
