An Illinois man was killed and woman injured in a shooting during a carjacking attempt in Chicago Monday morning, Chicago police said.

The incident took place in the 4900-block of South Calumet Avenue at about 12:10 a.m.

Police said when officers responded to the shooting, they found the victims in their car, which had crashed into an unoccupied vehicle.

The 20-year-old man driving the car was shot multiple times, according to investigators. He was identified as Isaiah Samaniuk. His uncle says his mother is distraught.

“My family’s really broken up over this. My sister called me about four or five this morning and I couldn’t even understand what she was saying,” Douglas Banks said.

He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The 22-year-old woman in the car was shot in the foot and transported to a hospital in good condition.

Police said they believe the victims were approached by two male suspects with handguns who tried to take their car, but as the victims drove away, the offenders shot at their vehicle.

Leandra Brown was sleeping in her apartment when she heard about five loud shots.

“I started praying,” Brown said. “I’m very religious. I rushed straight in the back checked on my daughter to make sure all the doors were locked and she was just low. Make sure her bed is low away from the window…checked on her and started praying for whoever it was for them to survive.”

“What are you supposed to do,” Brown said. “Just sit there and take that chance too? I would try to drive off too. I gotta try to save my family and everybody else but it’s dangerous. It’s sad.”

Police marking multiple shell casings and searching for leads. Meanwhile Brown said she’s moving her family out of the area.

“My 12-year-old she can’t even go outside and ride her bike,” she said. “I gotta take her all the way to Wilmette to where my dad lives just to ride her bike. It’s just dangerous but we’re moving. That was the last straw.”

Authorities said the two victims were not known to police.

Area One Detectives are investigating and no one is in custody.
