A 30-year-old Michigan man has been sentenced to prison for stabbing his girlfriend to death along with slashing the woman’s two young children.
Jacob Alec Ryan will spend the rest of his life in prison – without the chance of parole – for the 2021 fatal stabbing of his 25-year-old girlfriend Ciara Paul. The life sentence came Thursday, April 27, after a jury convicted Ryan last month at trial of first-degree murder in the killing.
The case evolved after Kent County sheriff’s deputies found Paul dead inside her Rockford-area apartment during a well-being check on Sept. 16, 2021. Police also found Paul’s two children injured.
Testimony at trial revealed Ryan cut the 5-year-old girl’s neck and missed her jugular vein by only about a millimeter. The 2-year-old boy had his windpipe cut.
Both children have since recovered from the attack and doing well now, the Kent County prosecutor said.
After the homicide, Ryan was eventually located in Toledo, Ohio.
Ryan appeared before Kent County Circuit Judge Scott Noto on Thursday and awaited his fate. On top of the mandatory life sentence, Ryan was also given a nearly 40-year minimum sentence for two counts of assault with intent to murder.
