A 36-year-old Alabama woman is dead after a shooting Friday night in Birmingham The shooting stemmed from an argument with another woman, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
Police said they responded to an apartment complex in the 3200 block of 17th Avenue North at approximately 7 p.m. on July 7, 2023.
When police arrived, they found Justina Zenola Wallace lying unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital, where she died the next day.
The Jefferson County Coroner has confirmed Wallace was pregnant at the time of her death.
Two people, a woman and a man, were taken into custody after the shooting Friday night.
Police believe the two women were in an argument with each other when 21-year-old Aaniyah Nowden shot Wallace. Police said the two did know each other as they have a shared child in common with the same man. Police did not elaborate further on their relationship.
Sunday, police announced Nowden is charged with capital murder with a child present.
Murder by the defendant in the presence of a child under the age of 14 years at the time of the offense if the victim was the parent or legal guardian of the child. For purposes of this subsection, “in the presence of a child” means in the physical presence of a child or having knowledge that a child is present and may see or hear the act.
Nowden is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with No Bond.
