The New Hampshire attorney general’s office on Monday announced that a man is now facing a murder charge in the death of his 7-year-old son.
Murtadah Mohammad was arrested on one count of second-degree murder for the death of his son, Jaevion Riley.
The attorney general’s office alleges that Mohammed caused Jaevion’s death by subjecting him to abuse, as well as not calling for medical assistance for his injuries.
In January, Riley was found unconscious and not breathing when first responders were called to his Eastern Avenue apartment. The boy was taken to a Massachusetts hospital, where law enforcement officials said he later died.
In court documents, investigators wrote that the boy’s injuries included burns on 15-20% of his body, and more than 30 loop marks with broken skin.
Mohammed was initially arrested in January, and charged with assault, endangering the welfare of a child and falsifying evidence. He was indicted in March on assault charges.
The attorney general’s office said Mohammed is currently in jail for alleged abuse against Jaevion.
The case is being prosecuted by the Hillsborough County Attorney’s Office, but it is anticipated those charges will be dropped and prosecution transferred to the Attorney General’s Office to pursue the murder charge and any other charges, authorities said.
“We expect that those charges would be dismissed or what’s called no process by the county after this charge gets formally brought before the court, which we expected to be this week,” said Peter Hinckley, Senior Assistant Attorney General.
