Homicide detectives in New Mexico went to the scene of a fatal shooting around 8:45 p.m. Monday night in response to reports of gunshots, an Albuquerque Police Department news release said.

Upon arrival, detectives found 23-year-old Sydney Wilson, who was found dead from a gunshot wound. Roads in the area of Central Avenue and Coors Boulevard were closed while an investigation was being conducted.

APD said it has charged a 13-year-old boy for the fatal shooting. Wilson confronted the boy about a stolen vehicle he was driving, according to police. Witnesses also told APD that Wilson was searching for the vehicle through GPS on her cell phone.

Wilson was on the phone when she saw the other vehicle while driving and told the person on the phone line she was going to confront the people inside the stolen vehicle.

The driver of the stolen vehicle crashed into another vehicle in the parking lot and a curb, which caused the airbags to be deployed. Several people exited the vehicle to flee from the scene.

Wilson made statements, and witnesses said the 13-year-old boy removed a firearm from his waist and fired several shots toward her.

Albuquerque police have confirmed the 13-year-old suspect has been arrested after turning himself in on Wednesday. He was booked into the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center for charges of murder, unlawful handgun possession, and tampering with evidence.
