The Russell County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama is continuing to investigate a homicide that left one person dead, according to reports.

On August 16, officials were called to the Dollar General in Hurtsboro around 11 p.m. in reference to a person being injured.

Upon arrival, officials found 43-year-old Petorey Naquan Varner was pronounced dead outside the Dollar General.

According to Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor, a 16-year-old has been arrested and is facing capital murder charges. His identity is not being revealed in accordance to Alabama law.

According to Sheriff Taylor, there does not appear to be a obvious relationship between the suspect and the victim.

A second victim, that saw the initial shooting take place, was also shot at by the suspect inside the Dollar General but did not sustain any injuries.

The suspect later stole a GMC Yukon at a different location which he wrecked during a police chase. The suspect was then transported to a Columbus hospital and will be extradited back to Alabama at a later date.

The teen suspect is facing charges that include:

  • Capital murder during the commission of robbery.
  • Capital murder during the commission of shooting Into an occupied vehicle.
  • Two counts of attempted murder and certain persons forbidden to possess a pistol.

The body will be taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery for autopsy.
